Trivia
Heard Around Town
John Bruce, an old timer in town, tells a story from times gone by. It seems that there were a number of folks in town that drove the good old Model T Ford (also known as T Model). Being relatively easy to tune-up by the owner or any other fine mechanic (like John), all that is needed now is a way to test the results of the repair.
Back in those days OLD Hodge Rd had a very steep topography and this was soon determined to be a fine test ground for newly tuned up T models. As described by John a quick trip to the base of the hill was all that was required. Stop near the railroad track, Then from this standing start accelerate and give it the gas. If you make it to the top of the hill your tuneup was good, if you did not make it to the top then better go back home and try again.
If these fine cars needed work done on the bearings then the ditch in John’s backyard was the place to park the car allowing John to crawl under and do bearing adjustments. If the bearing job was to tight, there were mules or horses to pull the car while weighting the rear end with sand bags to keep the wheels on the ground and turn the engine to loosen the bearings.
Extra Credit Question
It seems that when John Stalvey moved to town to become the Pharmacist he labeled the drug store the most important place in town. He noted that the following things took place at the Drug Store: Prescription filling, Post Office, Doctors Office, Manufacturing Plant & Soda Fountain.
If you can tell us what was manufactured at the manufacturing plant, then send your answer to the “contact us” Email address.
